The Highline Trail is 51 miles long, so I am section-hiking it. Tahoe and I started at the Two-Sixty Trailhead and hiked in four miles to the Derrick trail and camped there for the night.

This is Tahoe's stylish new doggie-pack.

The next morning we saw lots of wildlife. This is a male tarantula. He was quite aggressive, and made a big show of putting his legs in a fighting position and showing his pinchers. I saw a female several yards down the trail, so I think they were mates.

This caterpillar has evolved to look like the young pine trees in the region. Its bristles looked like green snowflakes, and the underbelly had orange and yellow stripes.

The trail was marked with reflective signs. This one is on the aptly named alligator juniper tree.

It started to rain pretty hard. Tahoe ran under a bush, so I put the tarp over us until it stopped.

These are termite trails. I like to run my fingers over them.

When we got back to the trailhead, Tahoe took one look at the car, sat down, and refused to budge. As usual, I had to drag him, pick him up, and put him in the car.

We drove to the Hatchery Trailhead and hiked the Highline Trail five miles to Horton Spring.

This was a cool view of the Mogollon Rim.

I stopped at this stream to filter water. Tahoe is not so picky. He surprises me with his weird trail etiquette. For instance, when we are hiking, he makes it a point to step off to the side of the trail to pee. I don't know why. But, of course, then he will go and do something stupid like pick up deer pellets in his mouth, just to see if maybe they are food.

Why is Tahoe so tired? Probably because he had a busy day of chasing birds, squirrels, deer, and a bear. Yes, that's right, a 300 pound black bear. I had a heart attack and yelled at him to come back. I guess that bear didn't like crazy dogs and screaming women because it ran like hell down the mountain.

I am always stunned when I am somehow able to fit all this stuff in my backpack.

I tried to get a picture of us together back at the trailhead, but Tahoe saw the car. That is him pouting in the background.

This is a bar in Star Valley. I am intrigued. Sexy dancing cows?

This is what I found when I returned home. Apparantly, the girls kept themselves busy with a project. They were both so stuffed, they didn't move the whole day.
